For people who love to bike.

BIKE FOR COUPLES

No it is not a tandem.  This is really a bike for couples who want to seat side by side - for all you diehard romantics.  Who wants to be together all the time — holding hands is possible.  Nobody will be in a superior position, unlike a tandem where riders always fight who will be in front.  This time the couple will hit the road side by side and ride to the sunset together.

Make sure you and your partner’s weight are not really opposites or else cornering will be tricky ;).

BICYCLE TREADMILL

Yes, absolute yes, you heard it right. A treadmill designed for bicycle riders. This is totally different from the usual stationary bike you see in fitness clubs or the small contraption you put in your rear wheel to make your bike stationary.

The equipment, called the Super Trainer, is 12 feet long, 3 feet wide and about 2,500 pounds. It has an endless patch of road which mimics a usual road ride. The cyclist can pedal up to maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour and can incline the road to a maximum grade of 16.3%. Will totally work in the Philippines at 220 volts.

Patent is still pending and pricing still to be announced. Unless you are thinking of being another Lance Armstrong you better just settle with the simpler version, the E-Motion Rollers at US$795 (Php35,000) or just hit the road, jack.

UP PADYAK PROJECT

It is about time. Finally, a major university have adopted cycling as an alternative transportation in campus. The University of the Philippines, spearheaded by the members and alumni of the U.P. Mountaineers and in celebration of its Centennial launched it last April 11, 2008. The project advocates bicycle rides within campus to promote less reliance on fossil-fuel products and battle global warming. Definitely, the lesser the UP Ikot jeepneys and cars inside the more breathable the air in the campus not to mention more tone bodies and smaller asses ;).

Students will be renting the colorful bikes with step-through frames per semester in the amount of Php500 and are required to purchase their own helmets. Most of these bikes will also have utility baskets where students can put their books. They will likewise be given a bicycle clinic on responsible and proper bike riding including proper bike maintenance by the Firefly Brigade. Most of the stores surrounding the campus will also be taught on how to fix bikes and cater to simple bike tune-ups.

Bike paths, cables and bike racks have likewise been provided for a definitely hassle free ride.

Wishing that other universities and other institutions follow suit.

FEATHER-BOA BICYCLE BANDITS

A new trend just appeared in the streets of Hanoi — colorful and decorated bikes, some with large paper butterflies, others with bootlet ipods coupled with loud speakers. This trend is totally depart from the usual rickety bikes one sees along Hanoi steets. Surely, anybody would be surprised once you see a stream of technicolor bikes driven by teenagers with music at full blast. Most foreigners are all smiles upon seeing these bikes but a lot of older Vietnamese frowned on the new two-wheelies.

Personally, I don’t think this trend will catch fire here — unless it will be Tour of the Fireflies everyday ;). Though we know that we are gifted decorators, just look at our parols or lanterns during Christmas, teenagers here would rather pimp up their cars than their bikes. Also, there is no place to parade their bikes — Metro streets are not just that friendly to bikes ;(.

BIKING IN KOTA KINABALU

Rasa Ria in Kota Kinabalu has almost everything each vacationer would want. Almost all outdoor and water activities are available, even horse back riding. As for us, we opted for a bike rental for an hour which cost us 25 ringgit (Php325) per bike. Actually, if we opted just to use the regular bike and not for the Merida then the hour rental is free. Me and Leslie took a map with us and toured the immediate vicinity of Shangri-La. The entire bike ride was around 20 kilometers traversing mostly even roads. Leslie even said that it was as if we were biking in Nueva Ecija since there were greenery and paddies every were. Nice thing that they have a bike path which made the entire ride a lot safer. Moreover, the breezy and overcast weather that day made the entire ride even more bearable. We will of course never miss every opportunity to take pictures.

Too bad that I cannot lug my Nikon DSLR because of its weight. But the iPhone did the job pretty well.

SHANGRI-LA’s RASA RIA RESORT

We just arrived in Kota Kinabalu after a two hour plane ride from Clark’s Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA). The resort was 45 minutes from the airport but marked by clean and well-lit roads. The place has the rustic resort feel of Cebu. Immediately upon arrival we were greeted by resort personnel who took care of our booking while we sipped on cold peach drink. We are staying in a room just a few steps from the beach. My kid’s are dying to swim but they need to postpone it till tomorrow. We learned that Rasa Ria has lots of activities designed to keep their guests busy. For tomorrow we have decided to join the 9am “bike ride to Terayong Village”. No idea where that is. I guess we will find out tomorrow.

Updating the blog thru my Iphone is not that difficult after all :).

ANTI-THEFT DEVICE FOR YOUR BIKE - PART 2

Bell Launches Ingenious Bicycle Anti-Theft Product

Bicycle theft has always been a serious issue for bike owners. Traditionally, bicycle owners have employed theft resistant locks like U-Locks, or cables and heavy-duty chains with padlocks. Even then they’ve carefully had to select highly visible, well lighted locations, and to ensure that their precious bike is locked to a fixed object. But the thieves still sometimes win, and bicycle theft remains a thorn in the side of the cycling industry.

But thanks to a new product being developed by Bell Bicycle Accessories, there may be a solution. Engineers working for Bell in a research laboratory in Switzerland have come up with a paint product that may be the answer to the longstanding problem of bicycle theft. The revolutionary paint will be sold under the patented name “BAINT Paint”. BAINT is a reversed acronym for Theft Neutralizer Invisible Application for Bicycles (T.N.I.A.B.).

The formula behind BAINT Paint was first discovered accidentally by a junior research assistant in the Swiss laboratory. The junior assistant, who has not been named, apparently added some chemicals by mistake when Bell engineers were trying to create an imitation White Lightning product for their new BrainChain line of bicycle maintenance products. When the assistant spilled some of the resulting mixture over his shoes, he noticed that his feet had disappeared. After discovering that a single application of the mysterious paste rendered all objects invisible, the Bell Development Team realized that they had stumbled upon an invisible paint. They immediately thought of an application of this amazing new product for the cycling industry. Bicycle theft could be combatted by painting bikes and making them invisible, based on the premise that a bicycle that can’t be seen also can’t be stolen.

It took Bell engineers over a year to replicate and perfect the formula, in part because the junior assistant could not recall exactly what chemicals he had used. But BAINT Paint is now in the last stage of development, and will soon be available to the general public.

The BAINT (Theft Neutralizer Invisible Application for Bicycles) Paint is easy to use. First a single coat of the BAINT Paint must be applied to the entire bicycle. This must be followed by an immediate application of a fast-acting catalyst spray (BAINT Paint Spray Pro), and within two minutes the bicycle becomes completely invisible. The good news is that if your bike is invisible, bicycle thieves can’t find it!
